What is a Discipleship Training School?

The DTS (Discipleship Training School) is a course that offers people the opportunity to strengthen their character and personality while discovering God’s purpose for their lives.

The main emphasis of the course is to deepen your relationship with God and to provide favorable circumstances for students to mature in their relationship with the Lord and with those around them.

During DTS, you don’t just study the word of God; you learn how to make it real in your life by hearing God’s voice and allowing Him to change your heart. DTS is your chance to seek God’s face intensely and experience the joy of intimacy with the Creator. Each DTS may offer local, national, or international outreach opportunities.

The purpose of DTS:

  • To GATHER and CHALLENGE people to worship, listen, and obey God, releasing them (within the DTS context) to serve through evangelism, intercession, acts of compassion, and other expressions of God’s heart for the world, potentially pioneering new ministries.
  • To INSPIRE and CULTIVATE growth in a personal relationship with God resulting in Christ-like character, based on a solid biblical foundation, the work of the Holy Spirit, and personal application of biblical truth, especially regarding God’s character, the cross, and His enabling grace.
  • To IMPROVE the student’s ability to relate to, learn from, and work with people, including those from different cultures, personalities, and perspectives.
  • To continuously EQUIP each student to serve God’s purposes both within and outside the YWAM family of ministries, strengthening a commitment to reach the lost, especially the unreached; to care for the poor, and to influence all areas of society.
  • To PASS the vision and core values of Youth With a Mission International as well as those of the local base, and provide information regarding the variety of opportunities to serve.

The DTS is made up of two phases of intensive training over a period of 5 to 6 months.

In the morning, you’ll have personal time with God followed by a class. In the afternoons, depending on the day of the week, you’ll participate in base maintenance or technical maintenance, theater rehearsals, group studies, discipleship, intercession, and so on. Evenings are generally free for personal study and reading books. During DTS, you’ll have one day off per week, usually on Saturdays, but it could also be on Mondays or another day depending on the weekly schedule.
During the two-month outreach phase, students are sent in teams to work in a mission field either in Brazil or abroad. The focus during this time is on applying the principles taught in the first three months, along with active participation in creative evangelism, training, discipleship, acts of compassion & service, and communication.
